Welcome to Root Down Horticultural Therapy and Counselling
Are you looking for a therapeutic approach that blends the healing power of gardening and nature with expert counselling? I’m Simon McIntosh, and I’m here to guide you on a journey of personal growth and wellbeing.
With a BA in Psychology, a Diploma in Counselling, a Graduate Diploma in Education, and a Certificate III in Horticulture, I bring a unique blend of expertise to my practice. As a Qualified Australian Counselling Association Level 1 Counsellor and a Certified Horticultural Therapist registered with Therapeutic Horticulture Australia, I combine my deep knowledge of psychology and education with the restorative practice of horticulture.
My journey in helping others began over 20 years ago as a qualified teacher and school leader. I’ve dedicated my career to supporting and nurturing individuals, guiding them towards better mental health and personal growth. My work as a Visible Wellbeing Coach for DET schools and my academic contributions, including presenting at the 2019 World Positive Psychology Conference on ‘Cultivating Positive Mindsets,’ have greatly influenced my holistic approach to therapy. My role as a school leader during the Covid pandemic in discovering new ways to foster community connection led me to discovering the importance of maintaining strong wellbeing practices.
Living in the serene Dandenong Ranges with my wife and three children, I’m constantly inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us. This connection to the environment informs my practice, where I aim to create a safe, supportive, and empowering space for my clients. Whether through therapeutic gardening or personalised counselling, my goal is to help you reconnect with yourself and the world around you.
At Root Down, I’m committed to helping you and your loved ones reduce stress, build resilience, and cultivate a more positive mindset. Let’s grow together on this journey to wellbeing.
Why did I make the jump to Horticultural Therapy?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, gardening emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing health and wellbeing. A recent international study involving over 3,700 gardeners highlighted how, in the early stages of the pandemic, gardening became a sanctuary for many, providing a safe and positive space for creativity, social connection, and mental rejuvenation. With more time at home, people found solace in their gardens, fostering deeper connections with family, neighbors, and the natural world.
Gardening and nature offered a unique opportunity to engage in innovative practices, bringing joy and a sense of accomplishment to many. Despite challenges such as limited access to gardening spaces and materials, the benefits of gardening were clear. It provided a therapeutic outlet for stress, strengthened community bonds, and promoted resilience during a time of global crisis.
At Root Down Horticultural Therapy and Counselling, I strive to recognise the profound impact that gardening and nature can have on mental and physical health, especially in times of uncertainty. My services are designed to harness the healing power of gardening and nature to support your wellbeing, helping you reconnect with yourself and the world around you.
