Welcome to Root Down Horticultural Therapy and Counselling

Are you seeking a therapeutic approach that harnesses the power of nature to enhance mental health and wellbeing? I’m Simon McIntosh, and at Root Down, I offer a unique blend of evidence-based counselling and nature-based therapy to support personal growth, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.

With a BA in Psychology, a Diploma in Counselling, a Graduate Diploma in Education, and a Certificate III in Horticulture, I bring a rich and diverse background to my practice. As a Qualified Australian Counselling Association Level 1 Counsellor and a Certified Horticultural Therapist registered with Therapeutic Horticulture Australia, my approach integrates psychology, education, and the restorative benefits of horticulture.

Two Unique Therapy Options:

  1. Walk and Talk Therapy – A traditional counselling session with a refreshing twist. We conduct sessions in the beauty of your choice of gardens in the Dandenong Ranges, allowing for a more relaxed and reflective therapeutic experience.

  2. Workshop-Style Horticultural Therapy – Ideal for individuals, schools, or corporate groups. These hands-on workshops use gardening as a therapeutic tool to foster wellbeing, teamwork, and resilience. I have successfully run these programs in Victorian schools and at the prestigious Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in collaboration with Beyond Blue.

My Journey: From Education to Horticultural Therapy

For over 20 years, I worked as a teacher and school leader, dedicated to supporting individuals and fostering positive environments. My work as a Visible Wellbeing Coach for DET schools, as well as my presentation at the 2019 World Positive Psychology Conference on ‘Cultivating Positive Mindsets,’ has shaped my holistic approach to therapy.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the profound impact of gardening on mental health. A global study of over 3,700 gardeners found that during the pandemic, gardening became a vital tool for emotional resilience, creativity, and connection. Witnessing this firsthand, I transitioned into horticultural therapy, blending my expertise in counselling and education with nature-based interventions to support individuals in rediscovering balance and purpose.

At the prestigious Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, I had the privilege of running the "Fibonacci and Flowers" workshop in partnership with Beyond Blue. This engaging, hands-on session invited individuals, families, and children to explore the fascinating connection between nature, mathematics, and wellbeing. Using the Fibonacci sequence as inspiration, participants created intricate wreaths while learning about natural patterns and their role in mindfulness and mental health. Blending creativity, science, and therapeutic horticulture, the workshop provided a unique, interactive experience that highlighted the calming and restorative benefits of engaging with plants. This opportunity to educate and inspire at an internationally recognized event underscores my commitment to integrating horticultural therapy with mental wellbeing, making nature-based healing accessible to all
